JANIE and JACK | HATCH

Scope of Works

Powells delivered the full fit-out of the UK debut dual-concept flagship for JANIE and JACK and HATCH, located within the historic Gaumont Building on King’s Road. Spanning approximately 320 sqm across ground and basement levels, the project brought two distinct yet complementary brand worlds together within a single, cohesive retail environment.

The works included the construction of two staircases: a bespoke feature sales staircase formed in steel with wrought iron black spindles and oak-finished treads, complemented by a traditional oak handrail incorporating wrought iron display shelving, alongside a robust back-of-house staircase designed for operational efficiency. Powells also installed a 3-stop customer lift and stockroom conveyor system, together with engineered oak timber flooring, fully designed and installed MEP services, sprinkler systems, ceilings, decorations, and integrated security, tagging and music systems.

The shopfront was adapted to incorporate a new single-door entrance serving the HATCH concept and a refreshed spray-applied façade finish. Specialist millwork, floor levelling to the ground floor, bespoke signage - including branding to the automatic awning canopy - and fully fitted BOH facilities completed the transformation.

Challenges

Challenges

Delivering a dual-brand flagship within a heritage building demanded careful balance between modern retail performance and architectural sensitivity. The project required precise coordination of structural steelwork, stair installations, and floor build-ups within tight spatial constraints, while ensuring that each brand retained its own identity and sense of discovery.

With two retail concepts, multiple levels, and complex MEP and life-safety systems to integrate discreetly, programme certainty and sequencing were critical. All works were delivered within a compressed 11 week programme, requiring disciplined planning, close collaboration with stakeholders, and rigorous on-site management.
