H&M and H&M Home Flagship Fitout – Churchill Square, Brighton

Scope of Works

Powells delivered the full interior fitout for a new three-floor H&M flagship store featuring H&M Home at Churchill Square Shopping Centre in Brighton. The project covered 2,558m² across two customer trading floors and a basement back-of-house area.

Operating as the principal fitout contractor, Powells delivered a comprehensive construction package including:

  • Installation of a new shopfront to the shopping mall, including glazing, signage and specialist render finishes

  • Structural works to support the new retail layout and circulation

  • Installation of customer escalators and staircase with glass balustrade connecting two sales floors, and new lift connecting three floors (sales floors and basement support area)

  • Full MEP installation, including power, data, RFID system, CCTV, EAS, audio music, emergency lighting and intruder alarm systems

  • Installation of HVAC, plumbing, sprinklers and fire alarm systems

  • Construction and finishing of perimeter and internal walls, including bespoke architectural features which include:

    • Illuminated daylight feature above the escalators and stairs

    • Full height glass partition wall

    • Pop-out backlit wall on wall details

    • Bespoke Armourcoat wall panelling specifically designed for H&M

  • Ceiling installations with perimeter lighting detail and tiled floor finishes across all trading floors

  • Installation of merchandising fixtures and retail display elements to cover Womens, Home, Mens and Kids departments, including customer facing retail components such as cash desks, self-service checkout areas and fitting rooms

  • Decorative finishes including painting, detailing, pop-out wall and wall treatments

  • Construction and finishing of the staff accommodation and back-of-house facilities

  • Full back of house fitout consisting of modern stockrooms, meeting rooms, administration offices, staffroom and welfare facilities

The store features dual aspect shopfronts, providing customer access from both the high street at ground floor level and directly from the shopping mall, supporting a cohesive, multi-level environment that integrates fashion retail with a dedicated H&M Home concept and enhances customer flow throughout the space.

Delivering a large-scale retail flagship within an operational shopping centre required precise coordination, sequencing and programme management.

Key challenges included:

  • Multi-level construction logistics within an active retail centre environment

  • Installation and integration of new escalators and lifts, requiring structural coordination and careful sequencing with MEP works

  • Delivering a series of new architectural design features, including a glass wall system, daylight feature and sculptural wavy wall panels

  • Integrating complex glazing elements such as glazing bucket details and alternative rendered finishes

  • Coordinating multiple specialist trades within a 14.5-week programme
